Al Wakrah 1 Al Duhail 0

Doha, 9 September 2020 - Al Wakrah shocked reigning champions Al Duhail 1-0 in Week 2 of the 2020-21 season QNB Stars League at the Education City Stadium on Tuesday.

Mohammed Benyettou scored the all-important goal in the 11th minute, as Al Wakrah put behind their 1-2 loss to Al Ahli in Week 1.

Al Duhail, who had beaten Umm Salal 3-0 in their opener, will now head into the 2020 AFC Champions League, which will resume on 14th September with all West Zone matches being scheduled in Doha.

Al Duhail were on the attack from beginning, whereas Al Wakrah took time to settle down. New recruit Ramin Rezaein skied a shot in the fifth minute to signal The Red Knights’ intentions.

Almoez Ali, Mohammed Muntari, another new signing Eduardo Rodriguez (Dudu) all looked like making up for the injury-forced absences of Karim Boudiaf, Edmilson Junior, Yousef Msakni, Bassam Al Rawi and Assim Madibo.

However, it was Al Wakrah who got into the scoring act, with Benyettou, one of the top scorers in last season’s QNB Stars League, finding the target capitalising on a mistake by the Al Duhail defence, especially Luis Martin.

Al Wakrah then tightened their defence, with Ali Karami, Lucas Mendes, Ousmane Coulibaly and Murad Naji staying strong against an onslaught of attacks by Al Duhail.

The Blue Wave goalkeeper Saoud Al Khater had an outstanding game below the bar as Al Duhail failed to score a goal.

The script was no different in the second half. Al Duhail’s Ali Afif, Ismail Mohammed and Abdelrahman Mohammed came off the bench to give impetus to their attack. Mohammed Moosa also took the field to strengthen their defence, but to no avail.

Walid Regragui’s wards did everything as the game wore on. Meanwhile, Al Wakrah resorted to counter-attacks.

Mehdi Benatia’s shot which was palmed away by Al Khater in stoppage time best spoke about the proceedings as Al Wakrah coasted to a famous victory.
