Doha, 10 January 2021 - Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani on Sunday received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, joining the ranks of eminent personalities and frontline healthcare workers targetted in the first phase Qatar's biggest vaccination campaign so far.
The target group includes people aged above 65 years (initially 70), frontline healthcare professionals and hospital workers, first responders, and people aged 16 and above with severe and chronic diseases.
Dr Maryam Abdulmalik, the Managing Director of the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), said three more PHCC centres — Qatar University, Al Waab and Al Khor — started providing the vaccine from Monday, besides the seven — Al Wajbah, Leabaib, Al Ruwais, Umm Salal, Rawdat Al Khail, Al Thumama and Muaither — that are already providing it.
The COVID-19 vaccine is not mandatory in Qatar and the public will be given the choice as to whether they receive the vaccine or not. However, several dignitaries have come forward to take the vaccine in an attempt to boost public confidence on taking the vaccine and dispel any unneccesary fears surrounding it.
