Al Sailiya Win 2021-2022 Season Ooredoo Cup

Doha, 29 March 2022 - Al Sailiya were crowned the 2021-2022 season Ooredoo Cup champions after they defeated Al Wakrah 5-4 in extra time in the final at the Al Sadd Stadium.

Mr. Hani Taleb Ballan, CEO of Qatar Stars League, Mr. Thani Al Malki, Executive Director of Corporate Services at Ooredoo, and Mr. Abdullah Al Mohannadi, Director of Events at Ooredoo, crowned Al Sailiya team members with gold medals and the cup, and Al Wakrah team members with silver medals.

The final was attended by a number of personalities, most notably Italian Pierluigi Collina, Chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee, and Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, President of Qatar Players Association.

The match was decided in extra time after both teams were tied 4-4 at the end of regular time.

Driss Fettouhi (98th-minute penalty) scored the winning goal for Al Sailiya.

Ahmed Al Menhali (30th minute), Mohammed Muddathir (35th minute), Walter Bwalya (51st minute) and Cergio Strandberg (60th minute) were The Peregrines’ other scorers.

Ismail Mahmoud (fourth minute), Nasser Al Yazidi (45+3), Jacinto Dala (56th minute) and Omid Ebrahimi (75th-minute penalty) scored for Al Wakrah.

Thus, Al Sailiya retained the Ooredoo Cup, where they beat Al Rayyan 2-0 in the final of last season’s tournament.

Al Wakrah started the scoring act as early as the third minute through Ismail Mahmoud, but they could not seize the early advantage.

Al Sailiya caught up with their rivals and what followed was exciting action.

Sami Trabelsi’s wards equalized through Al Menhali, who trapped a long pass before beating goalkeeper Saoud Al Khater.

Al Sailiya went ahead through Muddathir, who came up with an opportunistic strike off a pass from Fettouhi.

However, Al Wakrah drew parity, with Al Yazidi finding the target in first-half injury time.

The teams each struck twice more in the second half (Bwalya and Strandberg for Al Sailiya and Dala and Omid for Al Wakrah) and the match went into extra time, where Fettouhi converted from the spot to help Al Sailiya seal the victory.
