Qatar Maintains Membership in FIDE

Chennai, 9 August 2022 - The State of Qatar has maintained its seat in the International Chess Federation (FIDE) after Joe Chen, the national team star and former world champion, has been reelected to assume the position of financial secretary of the federation and member of the Presidential Council for the next four years, on the sidelines of the 44th Chess Olympiad currently underway in India, with the participation of the Qatari team.
The executive office of FIDE is due to hold its first meeting tomorrow to determine the functions, in addition to co-opting the contests and referee committee members and discussing the calendar of upcoming tournaments.
Joe Chen expressed her happiness for this success and Qatar's attainment of a seat in the chairmanship office in the list of the Russian Arkady Dvorkovich, who managed to retain his position as president of FIDE, by obtaining the votes of 157 national associations out of 179.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency, Joe Chen added that the contest was not easy, adding that the new FIDE council is indubitably awaiting substantial challenges ahead, including the horizontal expansion of the game in the developing countries, specially Africa and the work of upgrading the federation's contests, increasing the events in the new calendar and optimizing FIDE's financial resources, pointing out that she has special action plan dedicated to upgrading chess both at the Arab and Asian levels, including another plan that will commence in the upcoming period, pointing out that the action plan will support the chess game locally in cooperation with both international and Qatari federations under the chairmanship of General Secretary at Qatar Chess Association Mohammed Al-Mudahka who expressed his great happiness, because the state of Qatar has maintained its membership in FIDE considering this achievement as a big gain for Qatari and Asian chess, adding that such position is indubitably a great success and underscores the great, unequivocal and fruitful work provided by Joe Chen during the past years, whishing her progress and further success during the her next mission.
