Top-notch sports action continues in Ramadan

Qatar’s domestic football takes the spotlight as top-notch sports action continues in the country during the Holy month of Ramadan with several titles set to be decided in the next few weeks.

Football fans are in for a main treat as crucial matches are being played with at least three domestic titles set to be decided.

The horse racing and equestrian competitions are among the other major events lined up in the month. Most of the action is scheduled in the night after Tarawih prayers.

The first major clash will be played on March 28 when Al Duhail will take on Umm Salal in the Ooredoo Cup final at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium at 10pm. Al Duhail rallied to beat Al Sadd while Umm Salal shocked Al Arabi with a late fightback in the semi-finals last Thursday.

With QNB Stars League (QSL) entering the crucial stage, rounds in Qatar’s top flight are also scheduled with Al Duhail hoping to maintain their lead at the top of the table.

Second-placed Al Arabi and defending champions Al Sadd, who are third in the standings, will aim to challenge the Red Knights as Week 18 will kick off on April 4.

In a highly-anticipated title clash, country’s football heavyweights Al Duhail and Al Sadd will also face off for the prestigious Qatar Cup at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on April 6.

Action of country’s most popular football tournament – the Amir Cup – will be up next as the quarter-finals will start from April 8 and will continue till four consecutive days. Al Arabi will take on Muaither in the first semi-final at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium while Al Gharafa will meet Al Shahania the following day at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.

The venue will also host the clash between defending champions Al Duhail and Al Sailiya on April 10.

Al Sadd and Umm Salal will square off in the last quarter-final the next day at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium with all the quarter-finals scheduled to kick off at 9:45pm.

Action during the 60th Race Meeting at Al Rayyan Racecource on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Al Shahania and Al Bidda will play in the second Division Cup final on March 29 at Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club will continue to host its Race Meetings throughout Ramadan, which is expected to see thrilling night races at the Al Rayyan Racecourse on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The opening day of the Holy month saw Nazwa under jockey Lukas Delozier sealing the Al Wakra Cup victory last Thursday.

The next two weekends will also see riders contesting in the last two rounds of the 14-leg Qatar Equestrian Tour - Longines Hathab, eyeing overall titles in dressage and showjumping categories. The penultimate round will start on March 30 as per the schedule on the event’s website.

Besides the events on country’s annual sports calendar, several sports bodies have also organised special Ramadan sports activities with an aim to maintain healthy lifestyle. Al Shaqab’s Month of Wellness, which is in its second year after a successful inaugural edition last year, is one of such platforms.

The programme is loaded with physical and revitalising activities as Al Shaqab has collaborated with country’s top fitness establishments to give back to the community by providing community fitness classes during this Holy month.
