Doha, 8 January 2024 - Tajikistan's football team arrived in Doha Monday ahead of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 tournament. The team are set to play in Group A that includes the Qatari team, the title holder and the host, alongside Chinese and Lebanese teams.
This is the first appearance of Tajikistan's football team in the Asian championship after their first six attempts and are preparing to have the first trainings Monday at Al Ersal training facility.
Tajikistan's team played in the qualifiers for the 2023 Asian Cup and were eventually able to compete in the finals. They played in Group F, alongside Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Myanmar and won the second place with 13 points.
The Croatian coach Petar Segrt is spearheading the Tajikistan's team who is determined to accomplish a new milestone after he led them to the historic qualification for the continental tournament. He now strives to emphasize that the qualification was not merely a coincidence.
Segrt highly counts on a contingent of footballers who enjoy high expertise, not to forget that he led Tajikistan to incredibly win the title of the 2022 King's Cup in Thailand. He also led Afghanistan team in 2015.
The Tajik team will start the competition by facing the Chinese team on Jan. 13 at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium prior to competing with the Qatari team, the title holder, on Jan. 17 at the same stadium and will conclude the group stage by confronting Lebanon on Jan. 22 at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.
