Khalifa International Stadium

Location: Al Waab St, Doha.

Capacity: 40,000 seats.

Design: The most recognisable feature of the Stadium is its dual arches, sweeping across the skyline. Apart from these icons, there is now a wide canopy stretching out below the arches, that aids the stadium’s open air cooling system.

Unique factor: Built in 1976, the Khalifa International Stadium hosted the Asian Games 2006, the Gulf Cup and the AFC Asian Cup, among other events.

Legacy: Home to Qatar national football team, the Stadium is in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, the whole precinct is designed to drive involvement in sport and healthy lifestyles. Aspetar sports medicine hospital (a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence), Aspire Dome (the world's largest indoor multipurpose sports hall), Hamad Aquatic Centre, Aspire Park and specialist women's sports centres are just some of the facilities at Aspire Zone, in the vicinity.

 

Al Wakrah Stadium

Location: Al Wakrah City.
Capacity: 40,000 seats.
Design: The people of Al Wakrah have been sea traders for long. The Al Wakrah Stadium has been inspired by sails of the dhow boats they use.
Unique factor: A new Doha Metro station is just around the corner. It will tempt many fans off the roads altogether.
Legacy: Cycling and running tracks and a multipurpose indoor arena. A school, mosque, wedding hall and market is also being planned.

 

Al Bayt Stadium – Al Khor City

Location: 60 kilometres north of Doha in Al Khor.

Capacity: 60,000 seats.

Design: The stadium takes its name from 'bayt al sha'ar' meaning tents. The stadium is being constructed under the supervision of Aspire Zone Foundation.

Unique factor: Park near the stadium will be equivalent to over 30 football pitches.

Legacy: Tracks for running, cycling and horse riding. Parks and play areas, along with restaurants and food kiosks.

 

Al Rayyan Stadium

Location: Built on the site of Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium in Doha.

Capacity: 40,000 seats.

Design: The sand dune-shaped structure mimics the beauty of desert.

Unique factor: Over 80% of the construction materials are being reused or recycled.

Legacy: Cricket pitches, football training pitches, an aquatics centre, tennis courts, bowling alleys, pool halls, a skate park and an athletics track are just some of the facilities that the community can look forward to using in coming years.

 

Education City Stadium

Location: Education City, Doha.
Capacity: 40,000 seats.
Design: Nicknamed ‘The Diamond in the Desert', the design is inspired by complex geometrical patterns that pay tribute to traditional Islamic architecture.
Unique factor: As the name suggest, the area around the Stadium is a hub for education, lined with leading universities and educational institutions.
Legacy: Facilities will include football training pitches, outdoor tennis and basketball courts, an aquatics centre, golf course, health clinic, hotels and shops.

 

Al Thumama Stadium

Location: 12 kilometres south of Al Corniche (Doha's glittering skyline and seafront promenade).
Capacity: 40,000 seats.
Design: The design represents the 'gahfiya' (a traditional woven cap worn by males).
Unique factor: The area around the stadium was used during Qatar's bid for hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Then a revolutionary prototype stadium called 'Showcase' consisting of a 500-seat arena was set up for the purpose.
Legacy: A community hub featuring facilities for multiple sports, including handball, volleyball, basketball, swimming, tracks for running and cycling.

 

Ras Abu Aboud Stadium

Location: The Picturesque West Bay skyline, Doha

Capacity: 40,000 seats.

Design: When complete it will look like it has been made from building blocks.

Unique factor: It has been constructed using shipping containers, removable seats and other modular 'building blocks'.

Legacy: Modular seats and even the roof will be disassembled and re-used after the tournament, maybe in the form a completely new stadium at a different location or creating important social legacy structures.

 

Lusail Stadium

Location: Lusail (15km north of central Doha)
Capacity: 80,000 seats.
Design: The design is inspired by the interplay of light and shadow that characterises the fanar lantern.
Unique factor: The venue will both open and conclude the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.
Legacy: Post the World Cup a remarkable transformation will take place. Schools, housing, shops, cafés and even health clinics will emerge under the arena's roof, turning the venue into a unique community hub.
